For my drawings of people at southbank I was using mainly fluid tools to draw since most of the people were moving and i had to make fast marks to capture them, I've also gotten in the habit of using brush pens/ ink when live drawing from foundation, to make your lines more fluid and interesting. I was also drawing the architecture at southbank which personally wasn't architecture that I am drawn to but I did really like drawing it because of its simplicity and interesting forms and shapes. What I felt like I could have done more of was work in color. There wasn't a ton of color around me since most of the architecture was grey and so was the weather, however I know at night there are light displays so If I have to opportunity I will try to go back when it is dark and draw some more color.
Task Mood: record your feelings towards southbank
I started the day feeling excited to go out drawing, as we were walking to our meeting/ beginning spot I saw lots of interesting architecture, people, and things to draw, however as we rounded the corner I had to stop for a second. Right in front of the meeting spot was a prime example of the U.K.’s love for appropriating Native American culture, a circus was being set up but instead of normal circus tents, there were teepees being set up. Did no one see the issue with relating native culture to the circus? Did no one realize how harmful that is even beyond appropriation? I wanted to enjoy my day of drawing in southbank but I had to keep seeing those teepees and they were always in the back of my mind. I had to keep wondering if any student was going to draw them and see it as a gateway to use it in their project in a disrespectful way, I had to wonder if that was the case, how many nights would that keep me up thinking of a way to tell them that appropriation of native american culture isn’t ok and harmful. Native culture and lifestyle isn’t meant to be displayed at a circus. This culture, the culture that I grew up with, is beautiful and meaningful and I genuinely don't get how people can look past that and just see it as an “aesthetic” and something to take for themselves.
My thoughts on Southbank minus the appropriation situation are that it has always been a place that I pass by but never stop off or go to a specific place there. It's a really interesting and lively place a bit tourestly, but that made it more interesting drawing wise because there were many different people there to observe and draw. The contrast of the kind of dreary brutalist architecture and liveliness of markets and restaurants is interesting and also made for more information to capture.
Task mood: How the time and day impacts your surroundings
During the day the weather was nice, I think it would be a lot more crowded, especially in the summer. However because it was raining that day the crowds weren’t to bad. I feel that the weather makes you focus on different things too. When the weather is gray/cloudy/raining you notice the brutalist architecture, and the second time I went to draw it was sunset and I was noticing the sky, the trees along the river, and the way light was reflecting.
